RE: Can dancers get shin splints?

I do a lot of jumps in jazz class. No injuries for years. But since a couple days ago, every time I land a jump I now get a sharp pain in my right shin. It feels like something’s cutting into my front leg muscle about 4 inches below my knee. I read that it’s pretty common for runners to get shin splints, but not sure if this is the same thing. Can dancers get shin splints? If so what should I do?

Ouch I’m sorry to hear that! I’m not a doctor nor have I ever had shin splints in my life. But I have a best friend who has. It definitely sounds like shin splints from what you described. The only way to know for sure is to get it checked out. I would immediately put dance on pause until you hear what your doctor says. For sure avoid all jumps.
