Why wear ballet shoes?

I see a lot of people dance barefoot in other classes like lyrical and contemporary. When I practice my ballet at home, I never wear any shoes and it feels so much better I think. But of course in class it’s required. Is ballet so different from others that ballet shoes have to be ALWAYS worn?

It’s mainly for tradition and following ballet attire etiquette.
